History of the Virginia Lottery

Virginia's current Lottery isn't its first - in fact, the Commonwealth has over 400 years of lottery experience. The Virginia Company raised 29,000 pounds in 1612 in the 'Great Virginia Lottery' to help the Jamestown Settlement. Later, lotteries were used to raise funds for the establishment of the University of William and Mary as well as the University of Virginia.

The current Virginia Lottery was established by popular vote in 1987 and tickets went on sale in 1988. Proceeds originally went to a general fund for construction projects, but in 1999 lottery profits began to be allocated for educational initiatives.

Today, the Virginia Lottery brings smiles to millions of faces across the Old Dominion as players pick up amazing prizes and public education receives vital funding from lottery revenues. Over $6 billion has been allocated to K-12 initiatives in the Commonwealth since 1999 alone!
