Almost 600 workers may lose their jobs after Buzz Bingo announced it will close 26 of its clubs.

The move, the company said, is part of a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) restructuring deal to secure its future, reports the Mirror

Although 91 halls will continue to trade, the firm said 573 jobs are at risk.

It's not yet known if clubs will be affected in the West Midlands.

Chris Matthews, chief executive of Buzz Bingo, said: 'The ongoing pandemic has had far-reaching consequences for the entire leisure and hospitality sector and an immediate and significant impact on our business.

'Following a thorough review of our options, the proposed CVA will restructure our retail portfolio to ensure we are well positioned for a return to growth, while adapting to the ongoing, challenging environment as we start to reopen the majority of our clubs.'

He added: 'The restructure will, very sadly, impact a number of our colleagues and my priority is to support all those affected and keep them fully informed as we continue with this process.

'I would like to thank every single one of our colleagues for their continued understanding and commitment over this period.'

The company had already temporarily shut all of its clubs ahead of lockdown to ensure the safety of staff and players.

And earlier this month the firm said it would reopen its clubs from August 6 starting with 12 in Aldershot; Coventry Savoy; Derby City; Enfield; Feltham; Fenton; Gloucester; Leicester; Lordshill; Nottingham Top Valley; Swindon and Tooting.

Buzz bingo has introduced a raft of new measures to ensure safety at their halls including:

• A new maximum capacity to ensure social distancing
• Markers will be on the floor of all clubs including outside - to keep customers safe while they queue
• The installation of perspex screens at the reception, bingo sales and bar as well as between machines and fixed gaming terminals
• To keep players socially distanced, some seats will be marked ‘out of use’ although there will be areas marked as ‘group’ and also individual seating areas so families and ‘one household’ can play together
• A new cleaning rota will be in place while staff will be guided by new COVID Secure risk assessments

• Players will have access to a number of sanitising stations
• Customers will be able to use contactless cards up to the value of £45
• Menu changes will be introduced as will the serving of food
• The company's Buzz Buddies personal support scheme for customers including the elderly and vulnerable will continue
