Australian Coins
Since opening in 1965, the Royal Australian Mint has produced over 15 billion coins. These have been spent, saved and collected by people throughout Australia (and the world), each one demonstrating the ways that coins mean different things to different people. To meet the needs of all people, the Mint produces three distinct types of coin. The Royal Australian Mint was founded in 1965 in Canberra, Australia’s capital, and is the only Australian mint to manufacture circulating Gold Australian Coins. Its establishment coincided with the introduction of the decimal currency into circulation in 1966. This video is a lesson for students on recognising the characteristics and value of Australian coins. The song and video were created by Kelly Simms.
- Both Australian mints are known for producing many beautiful Silver bullion and commemorative Gold coins, including Silver Koalas, Silver Kookaburras, Silver Sharks and Silver Lunar coins. The Royal Australian Mint also holds the distinction of minting all Australian circulating coins.
- The money in Australia consists of both banknotes and coins, and the denominations rise in value from 5¢ to $100. While the banknotes and coins of the Australian currency are generally easier to differentiate from each other than those of other countries such as the U.S. Currency, it’s still a good idea to become familiar with the denominations beforehand.

Australian Coins Value
It wasn't until 1910, nine years after Federation, that Australia again created its own currency – the Australian pound. Even then, its coins were minted by branches of Britain's Royal Mint in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Half penny (½d), penny (1d), threepence (3d), sixpence (6d), shilling (1s), florin (2s) and crown (5s) circulated in the country. Production of half-sovereigns ceased in 1916, followed by that of sovereigns in 1931.
